Section 60B — Family Law Act 1975: Objects of Part

The objects of this Part are: (a) to ensure that the best interests of children are met, including by ensuring their safety; and (b) to give effect to the Convention on the Rights of the Child done at New York on 20 November 1989. Note 1: The text of the Convention is set out in Australian Treaty Series 1991 No. 4 ([1991] ATS 4). In 2023, the text of a Convention in the Australian Treaty Series was accessible through the Australian Treaties Library on the AustLII website (www.austlii.edu.au). Note 2: Division 4 of Part XI sets out principles for conducting child-related proceedings under this Part. The court must give effect to the principles in performing duties and exercising powers in relation to child-related proceedings or making other decisions about the conduct of child-related proceedings. Division 4 of Part XI also deals with matters relating to evidence in child-related proceedings.
